SAT

Regardless of what universities have been announcing in relation to standardized testing requirements, there is no doubt that standardized testing is still a key component of one’s college application. The SAT establishes a common benchmark against which candidates are evaluated – it is such a heavily-weighted component of one’s application that schools may be willing to overlook less-than-adequate school grades.

How long is the SAT?

The SAT lasts 3 hours and 50 minutes and is comprised of 4 multiple-choice sections:

  1. Reading Section – 4 Passages, 52 Questions, 65 Minutes.
  2. Writing Section – 4 Passages, 44 Questions, 35 Minutes.
  3. Non-Calculator Mathematics – 20 Questions, 25 Minutes.
  4. Calculator Mathematics – 38 Questions, 55 Minutes.

There is an optional Essay Section that follows Section 4 (Calculator Mathematics). A total of 50 minutes is given for this optional section.

Difference between the SAT and ACT?

The ACT and SAT are relatively similar tests – the two, however, have some notable differences. For starters, the ACT has a science section which is absent in the SAT. The ACT’s mathematics section is also known to be more challenging than the SAT’s.

As a general rule of thumb, students are likely to score higher on the SAT if they have a better grasp of the English language; the ACT, on the other hand, is better suited for those that are more mathematically-/scientifically-oriented.

What is a good SAT score?

The SAT has a rather unusual scaled scoring system (400 to 1,600) that takes some time getting used to. As a general rule of thumb, 1,100 is considered an average score, anything above 1,300 is considered a good score, anything above 1,400 is considered a very good score, and anything above 1,500 is considered exceptional.

How can I prepare for the SAT?

By developing a set of good habits in the form of problem-solving techniques designed for specific question-types. These techniques, however, are not that easy to discover on your own – this is where our experienced tutors come in. Should you opt for online sessions with us, we can arrange for lessons with tutors from Ivy League institutions.
