What is TOEFL?

TOEFL is to demonstrate a level of proficiency in the English language. Many higher education institutions, as part of their admissions process, require that students take one of the two – exchange programmes to English-speaking countries will typically have a similar requirement.

There are currently three types of TOEFL test.

  • Internet Based Test (iBT) - Students will be tested on a computer at a test center.
  • Home Edition - Students are allowed to be tested at home on a computer. A remote proctor will be                            assigned to the student.
  • Paper Delivered Test - It is use where internet test is unavailable.

What is TOEFL comprised of?

TOEFL exams are comprised of four sections: i) Reading, ii) Listening, iii) Speaking, and iv) Writing. The exams have different requirements, however, as to the four sections.

The Reading component features 30 questions across 3 passages (10 questions per passage) and takes 54 minutes. If the reading component features experimental questions, it will instead feature 40 questions across 4 passages and will take 72 minutes (these experimental questions will not be scored).

The Listening component features 28 questions across 3 lectures and 2 conversations and takes 41 minutes. If the listening component features experimental questions, the listening component will instead feature 39 questions across 4 lectures and 3 conversations and will take 57 minutes (these experimental questions will not be scored). Students will be required to take notes while listening so as to answer a series of multiple-choice questions presented afterwards.

The speaking and writing sections of the TOEFL are graded based on the range of one’s vocabulary, stylistic preferences, and grammar. The speaking component of the TOEFL takes 17 minutes and consists of four parts: i) an independent speaking task and ii) three integrated speaking tasks. For the independent speaking task, the test taker will have 15 seconds to prepare a 45 second conveyance of one’s personal opinion on a social issue. The first integrated speaking task will require reading an announcement, listening to a short conversation and summarizing the opinion expressed. The second integrated speaking task will require reading a short passage, listening to a short lecture on the passage, then summarizing the lecture in relation to the passage. The last integrated speaking task involves listening to a lecture and summarizing the main ideas in the lecture.

TOEFL writing component also features two tasks. The first task involves reading an academic passage then listening to a lecture within which the speaker disagrees with the claims made by the academic passage – the test taker is then to describe what they have read and heard. The second task is an independent writing task that usually requires either that the test taker to communicate their thoughts on a particular topic or that the test taker write about their personal experiences.

How Long is the Test?

The TOEFL lasts 3 hours and 30 minutes and consists of 4 sections and 1 essay.

  • 4 sections (Reading, Listening,Speaking , and Writing), and 1 essay

It is best to be able to achieve 2 minutes per question on the test so you will have enough time to review your answers.
