What is IBMYP?
The MYP is a five-year educational programme (may be abbreviated) for students between the ages of 11 to 16 designed to prepare students for the IBDP. The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding and emerging sense of self and responsibility as defined within their community.
The MYP requires at least 50 hours of teaching time for each subject group in each year of the programme. In the fourth and fifth years of the program, students have the option of taking courses from six of the eight subject groups (the traditional IBDP subject groups in addition to Physical & Health Education and Design). Students are, on an annual basis, also required to participate in at least one interdisciplinary and are required to complete a long-term project over the course of the entire programme based on their personal interests.
Why are schools choosing IBMYP over IGCSE?
Like A-levels, IGCSE is subject specific and is based on curriculum statements rather than IB's framework based programs, which is designed to encourage students holistic thinking and approach to problem solving. Schools adopting MYP grew to 108 globally in 2020, it is proving to be more relevant than IGCSE.
Previously, you'll have to attend an IGCSE school and obtain a minimum of 5 C grades to qualify for IB. Now with MYP a larger variety of student talents are considered providing greater opportunities for students to study IBDP and student will not need to change schools.
There are currently 18 IB schools and only 2 A-level schools in Hong Kong.
