What is UKCAT/UCAT?

The UCAT/UKCAT is an admissions test used by UK Medical and Dental Schools. The test does not include any science-based questions or curriculum material. However, it focuses on measuring student's cognitive abilities, attitude and professional behaviours.

How long is UCAT?

It is a 2 hour long computer-based test that consists of five sections

  • Verbal Reasoning (44 questions over 21 minutes) - Evalute student's ablilty to think logically about written information and arrive at a reasoned conclusion.
  • Decision Making (29 questions over 32 minutes) - Evalute student's ability to apply logic to reach a decision or conclusion, evaluate arguments and analyse statistical information.
  • Quantitative Reasoning (36 questions over 24 minutes) - Evalute student's ability to solve numerical problems.
  • Abstract Reasoning (55 questions over 13 minutes) - Evalute student's ability to infer relationships from information by convergent and divergent thinking.
  • Situational Judgment (69 questions over 26 minutes) - Evalute student's responses in situations and their grasp of medical ethics.

With school exams cancelled, there is a strong possibility that a candidate’s UCAT performance will be assigned a heavier weighting in the application process. As to how the UCAT factors into the admissions decision-making process, this differs across institutions – some may shortlist candidates who meet a certain UCAT score while others may adopt a slightly more holistic approach.

How can I prepare for UCAT?

  • Practice and Prepare Early - Developing a set of good habits in the form of problem-solving techniques designed for specific question types takes a lot of time and what for someone might not necessarily work for you so give yourself more time to prepare! However, these techniques are not that easy to discover on your own – this is where our experienced tutors come in.
  • Have a Schedule - Create a study schedule and stick to it. However, it should not just be about studying alone! Plan a schedule with a balance of activities. Allow yourself to rest, eat, and socialize.
